Say hello to Eric, our intrepid UPS driver.  He’s about to pick up today’s outgoing packages from The Meadow and send them on their way. Your gift could be in tomorrow’s stack.   Just give us a call, (207) 374-3785, or visit our website to make your selection.

And by the way, that’s David, my sweet husband, who packed all those pakages!

We still have beautiful Balsam Wreaths waiting to find a new home. They’re made in Maine, they’re beautiful, they smell great, they only cost $30.00 and every body loves them. What a dandy gift!

That’s all for now. We’ll be in touch when we get close to the homestretch.

The Night Before Christmas

Now here’s a really great holiday gift!

This richly illustrated version of Clement Moore’s 1823 Christmas poem is beautifully set to music by Noel Paul Stookey.   The story is narrated by Mary Travers (in what proved to be her final performance), accompanied by Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey.   The CD (included) also features ‘A Soalin’, the Peter, Paul and Mary classic.

Noel was kind enough to stop by and autograph our copies while Karen looked over his shoulder, supervising the entire production.   This book is a real treasure and is available on our website.

And don’t forget our beautiful Fresh Balsam Wreaths! Just click here or give us a call at (207) 374-3785 to place your order.

Show Time!

It’s official…Christmas has arrived at The Meadow!!!

We had a great party to kick off the season.  A good time was had by all. Care for an Hors D’oevre?

Recognize our bartender? He’s a pretty good singer too!

Please come see our Winter Wonderland or visit our website .   And don’t forget, balsam wreaths are here.

We’ll begin shipping fresh balsam wreaths on Monday, November 28th. I make all the red velvet bows and David does the rest.  It’s strictly a family affair with Jack assuming his usual supervisory role.

Each wreath measures 24″ and weighs a hefty 4 pounds, nothing like what you see on the sidewalk at the supermarket. And did I mention that they smell divine?

You can buy our wreaths  by clicking here or you can download our printable order form and do it the old fashioned way by mail or fax. Naturally, you can call us with your order (207-374-3785). We love to hear from you!

Oh Christmas Tree

Greetings from the coast of Maine.

November is well under way. Even the oaks, the very last holdouts, have lost their leaves.   Temperatures have begun to fall and (no) thanks to Daylight Savings Time, it is dark at 5:00 o’clock, too early for man or beast.

We’re busy burning the midnight oil as we prepare for our 8th annual Christmas Open House which begins on Thursday 11/17.   Christmas officially arrives at The Meadow when we install the tree and hold our collective breath as we try the lights.  Eureka, they work! In another few days, we’ll look like a winter wonderland clad in red and green.

Christmas means wreaths and we will begin shipping ours soon. Our fresh balsam wreaths are the perfect Christmas gift.  Each one is  made from scratch  by our local friends who collect the Balsam Fir brush after several hard freezes.

(The needles aren’t well set until after they have been frozen a couple of times.)  We’ll begin shipping on Monday, November 28th just after Thanksgiving. I make all the red velvet bows and David does the rest.  It’s strictly a family affair with Jack assuming his usual supervisory role.

Each wreath measures 24’ in diameter and is double sided. Weighing in at 4 pounds, they are hefty and full, nothing like what you see on the sidewalk at the supermarket. And did I mention that they smell divine?

We’ll write your enclosure card by hand, pack your wreath in a lovely white box, and off they’ll go. You can buy our wreaths online by clicking here or you can download our printable order form and do it the old fashioned way, by mail or fax. Naturally, you can call us with your order. We always love to hear from you!

Let It Snow

Greetings from the coast of Maine.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Whose idea was this anyway? It’s far too early for wintah. We awoke to snow and howling wind last Sunday. First order of business after building a fire and brewing a pot of coffee was to shovel, shovel then shovel some more. The snow was not kind to our still leafy trees. Branches were bent to the ground under the weight of the heavy, wet snow; it’s nature’s way of pruning.

We are none the worse for wear as most of the snow has come and gone.   And believe it or not, our Christmas Open House is just weeks away, November 17th to be exact. We’re already busy trimming the shop and suddenly find ourselves steeped in red and green. We were starkly reminded of the coming season when we received our first, unsolicited balsam wreath order from a customer in Louisville, Kentucky before we announced the beginning of the wreath season. Well folks, we’re never too smart to be taken to school by our customers. So here you go: its officially Balsam Wreath Season!

We think our fresh balsam wreaths are the perfect quintessential gift of Christmas. Our wreaths are made locally by friends who collect the balsam fir brush after several hard freezes then make the wreaths from scratch. The needles aren’t well set until after they have been frozen a couple of times. We begin taking delivery of finished wreaths just before Thanksgiving and will begin shipping on Monday, November 28th. I make all the red velvet bows and David ties on the beautiful Ponderosa pinecones and boxes and ships them all.

We always love to hear from you!

Here is New York

“The subtlest change in New York is something people don’t speak much about but that is in everyone’s mind.   The city, for the first time in its long history,  is destructible.   A single flight of planes no bigger than a wedge of geese can end this island fantasy, burn the towers, crumble the bridges, turn the underground passages into lethal chambers, cremate the millions.   The intimation of mortality is part of New York now: in the sound of jets overhead, in the black headlines of the latest edition.

All dwellers in cities must live with the stubborn fact of annihilation; in New York the fact is somewhat more concentrated because of the concentration of the city itself, and because, of all targets, New York has a certain clear priority.   In the mind of whatever perverted dreamer who might loose the lightning, New York must hold a steady, irresistible charm.”

- EB White, 1948

Squirmy

Our recent Poet Girl event at The Meadow featured Jacqueline Suskin (akaThe Poet Girl) writing poems on her manual typewriter while you waited, suggested by the subject of your choice.   It was a great success, especially for Dr. Jeb Hallet who asked that a poem be written about “Squirmy”, his forthcoming grandchild.

First Edition

Greetings from the coast of Maine.

Don’t panic…you’re in the right place! Welcome to the first edition of our redesigned, very snappy looking newsletter.   You should feel right at home since we tried to make things look familiar while creating a fresh new look.

The headings on the left allow you to read older posts in the Archives section or search by subject under Categories.   Personal Favorites will direct you to our favorite people, places, restaurants, cottage rentals and vacation spots; anything we like that we think you may like too.   This section will grow as time goes by since we’re just getting started.   You’ll find access to our website in three places: in the upper left hand corner (“visit our store”), in the left navigation bar,  and on the bottom of the page (“visit our website”).

EB White was fond of saying that “Man thinks he’s advancing as long as he’s changing.” His wisdom is unassailable, but we think our new format really is an improvement.   Let us know what you think.

By the way, we’ll be posting things regularly that catch our attention so there will always be new material to see.   So, bookmark the link and go to it any time you’d like to see what’s new at The Meadow or what’s going on in Maine.   We’ll email you as we have in the past, when we post something  we want you to know about.

In other news: Summer has begun with a vengeance.   After weeks of rain, it’s steamy hot and hazy.   If you venture out in the noonday sun, you’re reminded that only mad dogs and Englishmen venture forth in such conditions  (although the lilacs seem to love it).  On the other hand, when the Atlantic ocean is everywhere around you, there’s little to complain about!

Before you leave, make sure to scroll down and have a look at our other recent posts.   Don’t forget to drop us a line…and please,  come visit!
